I think I might’ve come across incorrectly when I said cultural decay. I mean to convey the consequences of a cultures effect on politics. For example wars, pollution, or nuclear weapons. I think you’d have trouble denying those have effects that are inherently social and require civic cooperation to prevent. Doing otherwise seems to me to actually objectively be a problem, assuming you value living. That’s actually what I meant about laziness as well, that we’re less invested in the core responsibilities that now exist with how advanced our technology and societies have become.

I agree you can’t force anyone, that’s not freedom, but I also feel and fear we may be past the point where inspiration can handle the challenges. FDR never had nuclear war looming, the interconnected and chaotic nature of social media to contend with, or a bevy of other modern factors like llms that I get the gut feeling are insurmontable. I’d like to be convinced otherwise instead of subscribing to apathy but I feel like I’m living through the dawn of a new age.

Fair and reasonable. I just don’t see a large force that would lead the current us in that direction naturally, and if I did I feel like I’d have more hope for a stable tomorrow.

Not saying this is the correct route, but I do see the cultural decay, foreign influence, and complete lack of civic duty causing massive political failures in the US in real-time as we grow lazier, less interested, and more content. Any idea how we account for that in a reasonable fashion?

It depends on the drive and the type of drive, but generally they actually start to suffer bit rot after 6-12 months if they’re left without power at all. DVDs also suffer from bit-rot on short time scales, especially if stored improperly. Also migrating data or having a copy of it on a hard drive is easy, copying DVDs is legally gray, difficult, and they really only make sense as a delivery vehicle for the file to a drive or tape (if you prefer something genuinely long-term storage ready).

Something that people are missing with the whole physical media situation is that it being physical does not preclude it from internet connected DRM, server requirements, etc. It just so happens that around the turn of this century DVDs came along and lacked sophisticated/connected DRM implementations, but it is not inherent to their physical nature. Physical media also decays. DVDs generally have around 20-25 years before bitrot starts to set in. I love the concept, but you’re better served by a hard drive than a DVD.

Hmmm… Honestly, it’s a very nice car. Mine is the chronos trim, so it has all the bits and bobs and over in the US we didn’t really get anything beyond the original E-tron Quattro. I will say, I think I’d rather have a BMW iX, it was pretty much nicer in every way (but it does look ugly I suppose). The extra range would be life changing though.

Yeah, it’s the HUD of an Audi E-tron. I was sitting in the parking lot adjusting the settings when I saw a licensing disclosure for the hud in that menu. Turns out, based on the copyright it runs Redhat Linux, which is kinda funny since it’s meant as a literal window computer.

I’d wager this is only the operating system for the HUD. The design language of it is somewhat different than the rest of the infotainment, and it seems this car has like 7 or 8 computers. As for what the underlying “car” itself runs… I’d have no idea, probably a heavily customized version of whatever Volkswagen is using in their EVs.

Idk where you live, but in the rust belt anything past 15 years old is basically dead due to significant corrison. I wish there were more to be done about it because I love wrenching on old Miatas, but they just continue to salt the roads even months before the first snowflakes (at least, where I live) and it eats vehicles to the point of safety issues and frame breakages over time. (My first car, a 1999 Suzuki esteem, actually had the frame snap while I was driving due to this. Body corrison was minimal, but the frame and undercarriage had completely given out).

I think they’ve been doing HUDs in vehicles since the late 80s? They’re not very common though since they generally have reliablity issues (this is a lease).

Lol yeah! Sorry, it’s kind of tough to photograph since it’s a HUD. I just noticed the “display license” selection when adjusting the height while in the parking garage today and felt it was silly enough to warrant sharing lol.
