Just writing this for people who’d want to know: hoshi (星) is the daily, common word used to refer to stars and planets. This is the most common word that someone would use to refer to a star. However, for science, more precise terms do exist: wakusei (惑星) for “planets” and kousei (恒星) for “stars”.
