A nurse taught us this trick when my wife was pregnant and had to get regular blood draws. Every time you’re about to get jabbed, tap-tap yourself on the forehead. Even better if somebody else does it. Nurse said our brain would get distracted processing the visuals of the hand, the bonk bonk sound, and the touch sensation. It would end up ignoring the jab sensation until it was too late.

It really does work. My kid used to freak out about getting his shots. Then I’d have him sit on my lap and do that. Worked like a charm. After a while he started requesting it.

Just a gentle finger drumming on the forehead.

For me it’s not the needle. I have no trouble with vaccinations. But as soon as I lose blood in a medical way (losing blood from injuries isn’t a problem), no matter how little, I get flop sweat and start to get nauseous. The problem is purely psychological and talking to the nurse absolutely helps. I have to lie down though. I’m fairly sure it comes from a traumatic experience when I was a kid. An inexperienced nurse had to poke the needle into my arm several times and had to fill many tubes for whatever reason. She then sent me to the waiting room and didn’t apply any pressure to the plaster. So I sat in the waiting room and blood just ran down my arm like there’s no tomorrow. I almost passed out.

“I passed out while drawing blood” should immediately ring alarm bells on the phlebotomist to put her laying down for this. Falling with a needle on your arm can cause serious injury.

I full on passed out getting a vaccination in college. Was sitting in one of those attached desk chairs, woke up on a gurnee rolling down the hall.
